Sony ZS-S2iP CD Boombox with iPod Dock, Black Review

Sony ZS-S2iP CD Boombox with iPod Dock, Black

Almost did not buy this little gem after reading the rather luke-warm reviews about the sound quality and other nit-picking items. Found this on clearance at a local box store and for the price took a flyer that it would serve for picnics and other outdoor music uses. This little box is GREAT for the use I wanted it for! It is NOT a replacement for my two home theater systems sound systems. It DOES NOT have a permanent hearing loss creating bass presence. But, it DOES run anywhere off of "C" cell batteries. It DOES play almost any variety of CD media. It DOES have a decent FM and AM tuning engine, and even more interesting...although it is not indicated anywhere on the box or in the advertising....the thing allows for my new 160 Gig iPod Classic to be plugged right into the front of it (even nicer with the little docking adapter that comes with the iPod) and the Sony remote actually operates the Generation 6.5 iPod perfectly! Operates all the iPod wheel functions, skips songs, THE WORKS! If there has to be a negative, the plastic carrying handle seems a little lightweight, but time will tell how it stands up to use. Nice product!!

Kensington K39258US Nightstand Charging Dock for iPhone, including iPhone 4, iPod touch, iPod Review

Kensington K39258US Nightstand Charging Dock for iPhone, including iPhone 4, iPod touch, iPod
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Kensington K39258US Nightstand charging dock works as advertised. The charging adapter is heavy and holds the iPhone up properly in both landscape mode and portrait mode (horizontal and vertical). It is sturdy is coated in a rubber coating that helps it from sliding on smooth surfaces. The only downside is that the actual charging cable is too short. The cable is a regular USB interface into a small power brick but with it being about 2.5 feet long it may not be long enough to actually fit underneath your bed where my power outlet is. The good news is that with a USB extenstion cable you can get it to reach but who really wants to hassle with a longer cable and purchasing it. Now if your power cable is directly behind the nightstand you are in good shape. I am assuming that you would use this device as a nightclock replacement.
If you do use this clock as a replacement take note. During the day when you take the phone off the charger you will not have a clock in the room. Yes this actually posed a problem for me as I couldn't tell what time it was when the phone was in another room.
You can download the clock app for free and test it out before you buy this charger. In the iTunes app store as "Kensington".
I hope that you find this review helpful.

Sony ICFCL75iP Speaker Dock with Alarm Clock, Radio, and 7-Inch LCD for iPod/iPhone (Black) Review

Sony ICFCL75iP Speaker Dock with Alarm Clock, Radio, and 7-Inch LCD for iPod/iPhone (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
11/04 Review Update. I have been having a lot of problems with the Dock for this product, which is really a shame. Its great in all other ways but I keep it at my desk at work and so I am always taking my iPhone on and off the dock. The dock is sort of flimsy plastic and it slides around very freely when extended. So when you are trying to put your iphone on the dock, the dock is sliding back & forth and so I have to hold the dock with one hand to keep it still while I try to dock the iphone. If you don't get it docked just right, the iphone complains this unit is not compatible with the iphone, etc.. I think this is due to the pins not lining up right. Its really annoying. I dropped a star off my review.
Also, forget trying to keep your iphone in its case, the dock unit is not adjustable (online other sony clock radios that offer iphone docking). As the main thrust of this unit is to be a dock for your iphone or ipod, its a shame Sony didn't spend a little more time on making the dock more sturdy and capable of keeping your case on.
--------
Just got this in - some initial comments that I will update later. So far I am really blown away by what Sony has crammed into this thing. It is by far the ultimate ipod desk or bedside accessory. Sony is really pushing the limits of an ipod/iphone accessory here. Looking at my review, you see a lot of cons - I think its because this unit pushes the limits so far that people will have thoughts on how it could be improved. Nothing is 'wrong' with this unit really, its just some of my personal preferences I think.
Despite some of the design flaws, overall its a fantastic unit. However, it might get promoted to my desk as opposed to bedside. I don't know that i really need a video screen bedside & a digital picture frame. At my desk tho, that would be much handier.
Pro's:
LCD Screen is extremely bright & crisp - you can play video from the ipod or iphone or from internal memory or a memory card or USB stick! I would have no probs watching tv episodes or even a movie off this screen. You can even watch youtube videos on the LCD playing from the iphone. You can choose full screen or fit to screen for video and stills. Video screen integration with the iphone is simply put, exceptional.
The unit has a memory card slot and a usb slot plus 1gb of internal storage. You can play stills, music & video from the internal storage or the memory card or the iphone. Extreme flexibility.
You have decent playback controls on the unit to control playback from the iPhone. Buttons are hard to see when "in bed" as they are flush on the unit's base, you'll have to just learn where they are I guess.
4 brightness settings for the LCD screen including "nightmode". My wife would kill me if this thing lit up the bedroom. Nightmode essentially just puts the time on the screen very very faintly, so faint even in total darkness its faint - I like it!
Built in battery for when you lose power - nice touch. Supposed to have auto time set but it didn't work for me. I had to set the clock manually.
Slide out tray for your iphone, etc. seems to be able to hold my iphone in its case - great news. Tray is not the best design tho.
Track & playback information displays on the display when you play music from the ipod - very cool. No album artwork on the unit however.
In settings you can see the "software" version which says 1.0. Maybe this implies we'll get updates for it that you can load via memory card? That would be nice. There are a few features that could act differently. Fixing nightmode and adding album artwork would be great.Cons:
No remote. Seriously Sony? Not even for basic functions like volume and play / pause? Serious lack of thought for a pricey item. My last Sony ipod clock radio had a great remote & was almost half this price. Sad face. This is a really glaring omission.
Speaker quality is pretty "tinny" - I was under impressed with the sound coming from this unit. My last Sony iphone clock radio had great speakers and cost less than $100. So the trade off is I get a video player but my music quality drops a lot. Again, tho, clock radio - not meant to be a full sound system.
The iPhone / iPod dock could have been better made. It feels flimsy and I have to use both hands to dock the iphone. One to hold the entire unit steady and one to place the iphone in the cradle. The dock locks when you push it into the body of the unit but when you extend it, it does not lock into place and slides back & forth. I sense a potential point of failure here.
It seems you can't delete the internal "demo" photos or video. Sounds silly but I don't want to see "demo" pics on my slide show. I figured out that if you play the slideshow from a memory card it skips the internal pics. There are about 6 pics of "kids" and landscape that always repeat if you play the slideshow from the internal memory. Very annoying that if you play the slideshow from the internal memory you are stuck with "demo kid" and stock photo shots in your mix.
You have to go into the settings to switch to video playback for the iPhone, it would be nice if you could switch to video easier than that. Also, if you stop playing video or use another function on the clock, you have to go back to video settings and switch to ipod video again. I'd like a button on the unit to do that.
I can't figure out how to turn the clock off when watching a video from the ipod, it displays the time in the lower right corner. Would be nice to be able to clear the screen while watching a video.
It seems you can't enter 'nightmode" when listening to music or using the "sleep timer" function. The screen stays on the lowest regular setting which is quite bright in total darkness. I'll have to play with it more - maybe they can patch it. This is a pretty big issue, what's the point of a sleep timer if the thing is lighting up the entire room.
The unit has no audio in (fail) and no headphone jack. It could really use both of these but you can plug in your iphone headphone while watching video on the screen.

Adorn your bedroom, living room, or office with contemporary flair. The ICF-CL75iP multifunction clock radio packs an array of innovative features into a space-saving design. View photos and videos on the 7-inch LCD screen, or slide out the retractable docking tray to charge or listen to your iPod or iPhone music. Additionally, this clock radio includes 1 GB of built-in memory, plus inputs for memory stick media, secure digital (SD) memory cards, and USB.

7-Inch LCD Screen Upon first glance, the most striking thing about theICF-CL75iP is its 7-inch LCD screen. Your iPod and Then Some The easy-access dock charges your iPod or iPhone while you listen, and slides out of sight when not in use. For video-enabled iPods, you can enjoy video right on the LCD screen.

In addition, since the ICF-CL75iP boasts 1 GB of memory and inputs for various storage media as mentioned above (USB, SD card, memory stick), you can enjoy media directly without an iPod--with support for MP3/WMA audio, MP4/AVI video, and JPEG images.

Dual Alarm Gently fall asleep or wake up to five different built-in nature sounds, your iPod/iPhone, or the radio. "7-5-2" alarm settings allow for different wake times on weekdays and weekends, and you can even set up the "fun wake-up" feature so a particular photo and quick voice memo wakes you.

In the case of a power interruption, the built-in lithium battery maintains the correct time, so you won't be late, and a sleep timer lets you drift off to your favorite tunes in intervals of 15, 30, 60, or 90 minutes.

JBL On Time 200ID High-Performance Speaker Dock with AM/FM Radio for iPod (Black) Review

JBL On Time 200ID High-Performance Speaker Dock with AM/FM Radio for iPod (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The On Time 200ID has very clear, powerful sound. Very good FM radio reception with fully extended pigtail antenna. It has tons of features:
1. You can fully customize your alarm settings (wk day, wkend, spec day) and the buzzer has an ascending volume feature that gently wakes you up (same as in radio/i-pod settings)
2. Because it is digital, you can see the station info (e.g. current song, artist, call letters) and it simultaneously show the current time in bigger font than the radio station
3. fuly illuminated controls that I don't have a hard time finding them. the brightness is adjustable but some people may have some difficulty with it's lowest settings.
4. Although it doesn't have any bass or treble controls, it responds well when I adjust the EQ setting from my I-pod, AND the remote is a FULL FUNCTION remote (e.g. has menu and enter buttons) other Ipod radio remotes don't fully control the Ipod ( I have a 4G nano)
This is an excellent bedroom clock/radio/I-pod speaker system If you don't mind some brightness that looked like a night light beside your bed

JBL On Stage 200ID High-Performance Speaker Dock for iPhone 1G and iPod (Black) Review

JBL On Stage 200ID High-Performance Speaker Dock for iPhone 1G and iPod (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
If you don't want to read my full review and just need to find a small speaker with great bass and a remote control that works with your iPhone and all iPods under $300 then this what you need to buy. Nothing comes close in that price range or size. And it's only $150, so it's easily the best value too; JBL could have charged well over $200 for this and it would still be the only one to buy. I was so impressed I decided to take 30 minutes and write a review.
I wanted something small with big sound (eg, good bass, which almost always sucks on small speakers). I wanted to be able to throw it in my suitcase if I travel. Usually Bose owns this space with their amazing engineering (I own a couple Bose products). I figured to get that kind of sound I was going to have to cough up $350-$500 for Bose's portable solution. Bose have two versions - one that uses AC power, and another with a built in rechargeable battery and it's $100 more. Nice units, and priced right. But when I was at Fry's, I stumbled onto this JBL. For $200-$300 less, this unit sounds almost as good, and is much smaller. Same footprint, but about 1/3 as tall. Nothing in the other 30+ units I tested came close to the sound to this unit in its size and NOTHING touches it under $300 for the sound it products. It also works with my iPhone which was a requirement. What this really means is you don't have to put it in "Airplane Mode" which turns off the phone to keep the interference from wrecking your listening enjoyment - which means you can still get calls when it's docked - it mutes the music and plays the ringtone though the speaker. Kind of funny, though, when the phone is in silent mode, it mutes the music and plays no ring tone- I would expect it to just show on the screen but not interrupt the music until you answer the call. This is the iPhone's fault I think, not this unit.
Another thing I like about this device is it seems to auto-equalize the volume of the music to each song so you aren't continually re-adjusting the volume. I don't know if the Bose units do this. Since every album is engineered at different levels, the annoying problem of some songs being loud and others quiet causing a constant readjustment seems to be solved. Very cool. I am guessing that JBL built a signal processing chip into this that does this, and also gets the bass/treble balance perfect and adjusts itself. It also seems to expand the stereo field to make the sound stage much bigger than this unit is, but not so much that it sounds weird. None of the other JBL units seemed to do this, so my hat is off to the signal processing in this unit.
The ten button remote control works great, but it's hard to read the buttons in low light, so I guess I'll have to memorize their position. You don't need the remote control to turn down the volume - the only two buttons on the front/top are volume up/down, so you can always get it quiet in a hurry if you can't find the remote.
Downsides: It has an Aux input - which I was looking forward to using it at my desk where my computer is to double as a computer speaker. When the Aux cable is plugged into my computer, it cuts the volume from the iPod in half, and limits the max volume of the unit quite a bit. Once the cable is unplugged (or the computer is turned off) the volume jumps up. This is a line balancing flaw that was apparently overlooked. Also, it is a bummer this does not have a USB port to connect to your PC. This would allow me to sync when docked, but I have to disconnect from this unit and plug into a separate USB cable to Sync. I would have paid more for this feature, at least another $25.
Oddly, the other JBL units I tested (the ones with a clock and other features) completely sucked in comparison to the sound of this unit. They got the sound right on this one and only this one. Bose gets it right every time, but JBL doesn't have the reputation for making small devices like this, so JBL had to price it this way to compete - take advantage of it.
JBL: if you read this, I'd like to see a version just like with these improvements:
1) Add a backlit LCD clock. Nothing fancy. No alarm necessary - the iPhone/iTouch has that. If it had a clock then I could throw away my bedside clock and use this. Your other unit with the clock/alarm sucks compared to this unit in sound, so just add a basic clock to this one.
2) Add a USB interface so I do not have to undock to sync with my PC.
3) Fix the level issue with the Aux input or remote it. As is, the Aux input is useless unless I didn't need the dock port, which is the only reason you would really buy this.
4) Add a battery option. You could sell the battery as a snap-on thing or separate thing so I can take this outside on the deck without a cord. I'd pay $50-$60 for this, when and if I need the feature (unlike the Bose setup which makes you spend over $100 up front). Heck even just a corded dongle with AA's that can replace the AC adapter would be a hack I could live with in this price range.
5) Improve the contrast on the button labels on the remote. Use different shapes for different controls so you can feel them without having to memorize them.
6) Add a wireless (or wired, but wireless would be better) subwoofer accessory to this and charge $150 for it. This would add the thumping deep bass (under 120 Hz) that would make this unit compete with a real home stereo and/or a higher end computer speaker setup. This would give you a setup for $300 that would sweep the market segment for sound and expandability.

Sony ICF-C7IP Clock Radio for iPod and iPhone with Hidden Sliding Dock Tray Review

Sony ICF-C7IP Clock Radio for iPod and iPhone with Hidden Sliding Dock Tray
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I searched a long time for a combo clock radio and docking station for my iPhone. Although there are several on the market, I wanted something that took up as little space as possible on my night stand, had a display with large numbers, would charge my iPhone, play music from my iPhone as the alarm instead of the radio, and was easy to use.
I FOUND IT!! This Sony clock radio is great, and has TONS of features. I like the large illuminated display, which has different settings depending on how bright you want the light at night. Setting the alarm is very easy (you can go forward and backward through hour and minutes, without having to run completely through the cycle like most clocks), and there are TWO alarm settings. You can set an alarm for weekdays to get you up for work, and then a separate alarm for the weekend. Pretty cool.
The snooze button is nice and big on top of the unit, and let's you take the standard 10 minute snooze, or you can keep pressing the button and lengthen the snooze time up to 60 minutes in 20 minute increments. A nice feature.
There's a sleep feature timer so you can listen to radio or iPhone/iPod music while you fall asleep. For the alarm, you can have a buzz, AM or FM radio, or a tune from your iPhone, and it works great.
Buttons on the front and side are nice and large so you don't have to grope in the dark, and there are a variety of customizable settings.
The best part is the hidden slide-out docking tray. Pop it out when you want to charge your iPhone/iPod or listen to music through the clock's speaker, and push it back in when you don't need it, making the unit's footprint as small as possible. The docking tray comes with adapters to fit iPhone or iPod. I use mine without either adapter because I have a protective case on my iPhone, but it still fits in nicely.
In reading back my review, I sound like a Sony employee, but I'm not. Have no connection to the product, other than I'm a satisfied customer, and would recommend this unit highly to anyone looking for a docking station/clock radio for their iPhone or iPod. There are too many other features to go into here. Have fun discovering all the great things Sony thought of to include on this unit.
Thanks for a great unit, Sony!

XtremeMac Luna Voyager for iPhone/iPod - Black Review

XtremeMac Luna Voyager for iPhone/iPod - Black
Average Reviews:

I bought this unit for my son for Christmas for use with his Ipod Nano 5G. According to the Apple website, these two products are compatible. However, when my 10-year old plugged it in with much excitement on Christmas morning, the unit did not work. After multiple attempts to call XtremeMac (aka Memorex), their phone lines were too busy to put my call in the queue, and I had to keep calling back. This was my first clue that this was not going to have a happy ending.... I finally contacted a real person, who promptly hung up on me. I called back again only to be disconnected, again. On the third attempt, I talked to a real person who told me that my problem was that the unit was not compatible with the Nano 5G! The hot Nano currently being sold by Apple. What! Since there is actually nothing wrong with the unit, I am not able to return it. The extremely polite Indian man informed me that this was my problem, not his. He does have a very good point. However, I did wish him good luck in getting a new job when his current employer went out of business due to poor customer service. The bottom line is do not buy any product made by XtremeMac.

Wish my husband wouldn't have thrown the box away so quickly. I would have sent it back. After playing it for about 2 weeks the sound fades in and out. My IPhone worked great when I first got it. Now my music (the iphone setting on the radio) keeps shutting off. Goes back to regular clock mode and that is never the right time either. I always go by reviews before I purchase a product so I was surprised how awful this radio is. Would not recommend it to anyone. I really got burned.
My husband did recycling the week after I got this so I no longer have the box to return it.

Altec Lansing M202 Altec Lansing Dual-Charging iPod Dock Review

Altec Lansing M202 Altec Lansing Dual-Charging iPod Dock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Altec Lansing M202 is a neat, convenient little speaker dock, with surprisingly okay sound for a very small unit. Its strong points are its size -- much tinier than you'd think from the photos, easy to tuck into a corner of a bedside table or a shelf -- and the dual docks, allowing it to be home base for a couple's iPhones or one person's phone and iPod. The unit is straightforward and simple to operate, even without the free custom app (which is a nice touch). But the quality of its construction is surprisingly cheap considering the price; it's a flimsy, lightweight plastic speaker enclosure, with unattractive, cheap cloth permanently fixed over the speakers, and there are some obvious assembly problems like misaligned seams. (Also note that, though the unit does work with the iPhone 4, it only includes plastic dock shims for the 3G/3Gs and the iPod Touch; other iPod and iPhone models can only be docked loosely. It's a weird oversight considering the near-zero cost of these plastics.)
The sound quality is fine, even good for such a small unit, but not miraculous. Given that the unit is built around two very, very small (approx. 2.5") drivers stuck in a lightweight ported plastic enclosure, the sound it puts out is, unsurprisingly, very light on bass and tends to be almost painfully bright on some music. I found this a particular problem listening to jazz -- Miles Davis's trumpet was so bright, almost tinny, that it completely overpowered the rest of his band -- while guitar-based rock came out much better, sounding almost as well-rounded as it would on a larger stereo system. Podcasts and vocals are a good fit for this unit, but I wouldn't even want to try listening to hip-hop on something this bass-deficient.
So, this is a nice enough product just on its merits, but its price is a problem. The M202 is stuck in no-man's-land at this price point. Despite the convenience of its dual docks, this speaker dock is caught between, on the one hand, much cheaper units that are about as good as it, and on the other, only slightly more expensive ones that are much, much better. If you want a speaker dock primarily in order to listen to music, there are many others to consider first: units such as the SpeckTone Retro or the Yamaha PDX-30 are competitively priced, better-constructed, and produce far better sound. For light vocal listening and bedside convenience, you can get any of a hundred products of similar flimsy-plastic construction quality, for much less than the price of this unit, that still won't sound too much worse. Unless you have a specific need for the dual iPhone/iPod docks, the M202 is probably not the best value for your money, even though it's a perfectly nice, compact, convenient unit.
[Update: I'm revising my rating down to 2 stars after living with the unit for several more months. Despite the manufacturer's claim that the unit is shielded, loud, pulsing cellular interference has been a recurrent problem with an iPhone docked in the M202. And the endless reminders to install the dock-specific app every time the phone is re-docked are a real annoyance.]

Bob 5 in 1 Wobble Clock Silver Review

Bob 5 in 1 Wobble Clock Silver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I believe the Bob 5-in-1 Wobble Clock will be remembered as the moment that synergy met ubiquity. The penta-mode capability (activated with a hidden switch on the base of the unit) mirrors the duality of man vs. nature. The weight of the unit is satisfying, so much so that it might sail through plate glass without even breaking a sweat. I will one day be an old man, and gaze lovingly at my Bob 5-in-1 Wobble Clock, thinking, "Hasn't it been a charmed life? Hasn't it?"

GenevaSound S HiFi Docking Station with FM and Alarm for iPod/iPhone (Black) Review

GenevaSound S HiFi Docking Station with FM and Alarm for iPod/iPhone (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I am a tech geek gadget freak--I admit it--but I'm also a music fanatic and an audiophile who has worked in the home theater/hifi/consumer electronics industry most of my life, and more importantly I've had the opportunity to listen to literally hundreds of sound systems, big and small, over my career. I do have a great, large, 2-channel audio system in my living room that I use for critical listening, but when bopping around the house I actually prefer to haul my iPhone around in my pocket and use it as a source to stream to wirelessly from my iTunes collection on my computer (told you I was a geek), popping it into iPod docks and minisystems I have placed in each room.
Each of these dock speakers/systems in the house is from a different manufacturer, so I have quite a bit of listening experience with many brands, not only from the units I own or have owned, but also from demos I've done at Apple retail stores and many Consumer Electronics Shows. I'd also like to think I have a pretty discriminating ear, but that's just my opinion.
The GenevaSound S by Swiss company Geneva Lab is hands-down the best iPhone/iPod dock speaker system in its size and price range that I've ever heard. I currently own Klipsch, Bose, Logitech, and Cambridge Soundworks units, and it blows them all away. Surprisingly, the Klipsch iGroove SXT comes closest to the Geneva and that's at half the price (if you're paying full retail). If you need a great sounding iPod speaker dock without a radio or alarm functions it's my solid recommendation. The Bose Sounddock is the product that's most comparably priced to the Geneva S, but based on the sound quality (or lack thereof) I've heard that thing produce I wouldn't take one home if you gave it to me. Plus--no radio, no alarm--it's not even a comparable unit even though it sells at retail for the same price as the Geneva S. The unit I'm replacing with my Geneva, a Bose Wave clock radio/CD player, sounds so bad in comparison that it went right to the trash after I set the Geneva up and listened to it.
First, the sound. Full, decent stereo separation, great low end (for its size anyway), clear highs. It's perfect for a bedroom, which as an alarm clock is what it's designed for, but I wouldn't recommend it for any room larger than that. I think based on the volume level you would need to fill a large room you would probably get some rattle and distortion in the cabinet. But again, it should give you more than enough output in your bedroom, the space for which it was designed.
Also, I've read in some online reviews of the product that the tone controls (separate bass and treble) on the remote control have no audible effect on the sound. I don't agree. While their effect on the sound is definitely more subtle than the tone controls on a full sized home audio system, they did change the sound noticeably when I bumped them up or down.
The looks. It's a stunning-looking unit, and very well designed from an aesthetic aspect. Reminds me somewhat of the Bang & Olufson line a little, but much cleaner and simpler. And definitely sturdier. Based on the weight of the unit and the build quality, I doubt you'll have any reliability issues. I bought the black lacquer version, and it looks as good if not better than advertised. I do have a bit of a beef with the included stand though...not sure why they didn't make it in a color matching the cabinet. The gray metal looks a little cheap holding up the unit, and I imagine it would look equally cheesy with the white and red versions. But despite how the stand detracts from its overall beauty, I would never use the unit without it. You will definitely get better sound from the Geneva if it's raised off of the surface a few inches, plus using it with the stand does give you a little more room on your nightstand.
The features have been detailed pretty thoroughly on the product's Amazon page here, so I won't go over them again. It's a pretty stripped down product, without the number of bells and whistles I would have preferred for the price. Two things I DID like about the Bose Wave's clock radio was the way the alarm would very gradually increase in volume until it reached your preset level, and the way the LED display would dim or brighten automatically based on the light in the room. But hey--the Swiss are known for their minimalism aren't they? And besides, the sound quality is far more important to me than those small innovations.
The unit is far from perfect, in spite of its great sound quality. Here are my quibbles, beefs, and cons:
--The clock. Military time only. Yeah I can do the math in my head after Noon, but c'mon Geneva! It's just a simple 4-digit LED display. How hard would it have been to program the units shipped to the US differently? Not a deal-breaker though.
--The radio. You have to use an old-school, chrome, telescoping metal radio antenna (included) to get any reception whatsoever. There's a good reason you won't see it in any of the product images: it completely ruins the aesthetic of the unit. UGLY. Good thing you can unplug it or retract it when not in use. And even with the ugly antenna plugged in, I still get pretty poor reception no matter which direction I place it in. I live in a densely populated part of the LA metro area too, so my distance from radio towers isn't an issue. My Bose and Cambridge units (both clock radios) do a far better job of radio reception in the exact same location. Also, the GenevaSound S is FM only. But seriously--if you're going to listen to garbage quality AM on your clock radio this unit probably isn't for you. I'm sure you can pick up a hotel-grade radio for $10 or so at your local drug store for that. Overall these radio issues are not deal-breakers for me. I didn't buy a device that plays music this beautifully to listen to FM, and since I use it with my iPhone I have plenty of apps installed that allow me to stream radio anyway, and in much better quality.
--Mode switching. A little bothersome quirk I noticed: when you pull your iPhone/iPod out of the dock, it automatically switches to the FM radio. It wouldn't be such a big deal, except in my case since my FM reception is so horrible it ends up going from music to loud static. Why doesn't it just turn off? Not sure why they designed it that way, but not a good idea in my opinion. Geneva does warn you about this feature in the manual, but that still doesn't excuse it from being a bad idea. Not a deal-breaker, and you may get better FM reception than me so this may not be an issue for you anyway.
--Alarm. Just one alarm. Both of my other clock radios have two, which is great for cohabiting couples. Do all Swiss people sleep alone? I also wish you could listen to one source and wake to another, a feature on my other two clock radios. With the Geneva, it will only wake you to whatever source you were listening to when you fell asleep. I'd prefer to sleep to music and wake to the radio, but no can do. Also not a deal-breaker, but worth noting. If you're an iPhone user like me, I've actually found a workaround for this: turn off the GenevaSound S's alarm completely and use the iPhone's built-in alarm in its Clock app (included with every iPhone). That way you can still fall asleep to the music of your choice and then wake to either one of the iPhone's 25 standard alarm sounds or to one of your ring tones instead of the one GevevaSound S's own unimaginative "beep". Another benefit of my method is that in the unlikely event you lose power at home overnight you'll still be awakened by the alarm on the iPhone played through its own little speaker. Geneva claims in the manual "the clock remains valid for up to 1 hour of power loss." In my experience "up to" usually refers to a best case scenario, so if you work in a critical job that you can not afford to show up late for I'm not sure I'd put my trust in Geneva Labs on this one.
--Sleep timer. Or rather lack thereof. That's right, for some reason Geneva Labs decided to leave off this one simple feature that EVERY CLOCK RADIO I'VE EVER OWNED had. So if you're gonna fall asleep to music you're pretty much gonna have to hear the whole album or playlist. Good use for the iPhone/iPod's "On The Go" playlist feature, by the way. And forget about falling asleep listening to the radio, because it will play all night long AND you'll never wake up to an alarm (remember--the GenevaSound S will only wake you to the last source you had on). This is actually the biggest design flaw I see in the unit, and could be a dealbreaker for some if you use it in the bedroom mostly as a clock radio. It wasn't for me--the unit allows you to play an iPhone/iPod through the dock and another through the Line In simultaneously, so I'm working around this by using my iPhone's built-in alarm while listening to music on a separate iPod through the line input. Did I mention I'm a geek?
But none of these issues are serious enough to make me return the GenevaSound S or replace it, and in the end it's all about the sound quality, which is phenomenal. I've found myself going to bed a little earlier and laying in bed a little later in the morning just to stay in the bedroom and listen to music. It sounds that good.
And in my experience, when an audio product makes you want to listen to music more often you've got a winner on your hands.

From the Swiss firm that first introduced luxury audio fidelity for iPod systems comes the new GenevaSound S - bringing great sound, style and simplicity to the bedroom, kitchen, office and more. GenevaSound S sounds better and does more than any single-function iPod dock on the market, some of which cost 30% to almost 100% more. With more features than single-function docks, GenevaSound S includes the new PowerDock connector, new TouchLight controls, and a digital radio tuner with alarm clock. TouchLight controls are invisible until a hand reaches for the cabinet. Not just eye-catching, it offers extensive control of the iPod menu. (Competitors have limited iPod controls.) When the iPod/iPhone is removed, the motorized PowerDock spins closed and the protruding iPod/iPhone 30-pin connector, a sensitive part, disappears into the cabinet, protecting it from damage and dust. GenevaSound S also comes with a table stand, allowing the user the choice of elevating the system, so it takes up less space on a nightstand, a counter or a desk. The digital radio and programmable alarm make it the best-sounding, simplest iPod clock radio ever, a product segment littered with low-fi sound and eyesore design. It's the first with solid stereo sound and fine design lines.

Boston Acoustics Duo-I Plus iPhone/iPod Dock AM/FM Stereo Radio and Clock Functions (Gloss White) Review

Boston Acoustics Duo-I Plus iPhone/iPod Dock AM/FM Stereo Radio and Clock Functions (Gloss White)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought the Duo-i because I needed something for my bedroom that served three purposes: a radio for general listening, a quality iPod player, and a set of good-sounding, external speakers for my 19" TV.
Positives:
The radio produces surprisingly booming lows for its size, and exceptionally detailed high end. The clarity of the speakers is stunning. The radio can easily fill a room with sound. Besides an iPod dock on the top, the radio offers two auxiliary inputs for flexibility. I use the rear aux RCA inputs for my bedroom TV, and the front aux 1/8" input will come in handy if I ever want to run my other MP3 players through the radio. The automatically-dimming display is a novel touch, too.
The BIIIIIG negative:
The radio has booming lows and very clear high end, but there's not enough in between. Apparently, Boston Acoustics tried too hard to give this radio a big sound, and, in the process, forgot that a radio this size should still have a good midrange presence. The radio seems to lack terribly in the 600Hz-3kHz range. Not only does this "reshape" the music, but it renders the AM radio worthless -- talk shows sound boomy and unintelligible, even with the bass all the way down and the treble all the way up. This wouldn't have been a problem, except Boston Acoustics did not provide a midrange EQ level control, and this radio needs one in the worst way.
In fact, in order to get acceptable sound when running my TV's audio through the Duo-i, I have to leave my TV's cheesy, little, internal speakers turned on. They compensate by providing some of the desired mid frequencies that the Duo-i lacks.
Because the low end is too loud relative to the rest of the frequencies, I experimented by loosely plugging the rear bass ports with my fingers. The bass response suddenly tightened up and became more natural-sounding. So my radio's bass ports are now loosely corked. (I even wrote to Boston Acoustics and suggested they begin shipping their radios with a couple different sets of "port corks" for discerning listeners.)
Summary:
If you typically listen to your stereo with a smiley-faced graphic EQ, you'll love this radio. But, if you prefer a flatter frequency response and/or listen to AM radio, the Duo-i is not the radio for you.
Please note that I am a recording engineer by trade, so I am going to be more critical of audio quality than most.

When I got this piece, there were no reviews at all, but still I wanted to buy it for its stylish looks. Frankly speaking, I didn't have much expectations on this prodcut interms of the sound quality, since its just 5W, but I was really surprised to see the sound it generates! Awesome sound quality - Too good for your bedroom. Obviously, you cannot compare it with a hometheatre system but for a iPod/iPhone dock, its way at the top. The FM radio, CD, AUX and USB ports are a big advantage and I was very pleased that it supports iPhone 3G and 3GS as well. I totally liked it and would definitely recommend it to anyone.

iHome iP47 Bluetooth Clock Radio for iPod and iPhone (Black) Review

iHome iP47 Bluetooth Clock Radio for iPod and iPhone (Black)
Average Reviews:

Be warned, this product only has a 90 day warranty. After owning this product for only five months it began producing an overwhelmingly loud hissing noise that could not be remedied. Thinking I had a year warranty like most modern products, the iHome company quickly informed me of my expired 90 day policy. Now I have a defunct product not even six months old, complete waste of money.
