(More customer reviews)Almost did not buy this little gem after reading the rather luke-warm reviews about the sound quality and other nit-picking items. Found this on clearance at a local box store and for the price took a flyer that it would serve for picnics and other outdoor music uses. This little box is GREAT for the use I wanted it for! It is NOT a replacement for my two home theater systems sound systems. It DOES NOT have a permanent hearing loss creating bass presence. But, it DOES run anywhere off of "C" cell batteries. It DOES play almost any variety of CD media. It DOES have a decent FM and AM tuning engine, and even more interesting...although it is not indicated anywhere on the box or in the advertising....the thing allows for my new 160 Gig iPod Classic to be plugged right into the front of it (even nicer with the little docking adapter that comes with the iPod) and the Sony remote actually operates the Generation 6.5 iPod perfectly! Operates all the iPod wheel functions, skips songs, THE WORKS! If there has to be a negative, the plastic carrying handle seems a little lightweight, but time will tell how it stands up to use. Nice product!!

(More customer reviews)My number one criteria in my search for a clock radio is a digital tuner. If you set a radio station you want to know that you are on that station. Having an analog dial be off slightly may mean you will not hear what you expect or maybe you will hear nothing at all. I am not aware of any other digital tuner clock radio close to this price. This one seems to perform fine. The CD is a good feature, and the unit comes with a CD of interesting sounds. I have been waking lately to mission bells and birds, and it beats the bad news on the radio!
The controls are reasonably straight forward once you get the hang of it. The clock brightness can be lower for night time, although it could be even a little dimmer.
Overall not a bad radio and I got mine at a good price.

(More customer reviews)I received this radio five days ago. I needed a decent clock radio that played cds, had a repeat button, and was unobtrusive enough to be on the nightstand. When the radio showed up there were no instructions in the box, which I figured was okay since it's just a clock radio. After I got it plugged in and the time set, I tried to play a cd. The power button wouldn't turn it on. With no instructions I felt stupid not being able to figure it out. I left it plugged in over night and the alarm worked fine on the morning. The next night I tried the power button again and was able to play a cd all night to help me sleep. The cd player makes a whirring noise that was distracting. Since my sleep cds are mostly white noise the extra noise was annoying. I think if it was music it might not have been so noticeable. The next night I was all set to play a cd at bedtime and, again, no power. That was Thursday night and it's now Sunday and, with the exception of the clock and alarm, there hasn't been power since the second night. I don't hear any short so I think it's just a bad machine, maybe too cheap. I'm returning it tomorrow.

When my daughter started college, I wanted to buy her a good CD clock radio, but didn't want to spend the money for another Bose. I searched long and hard. There weren't many good choices. I first bought an Emerson SmartSet CD Clock Radio. It turned out to have two defects: the CD didn't play and the forward button didn't function. I returned it and bought this one.
This radio was built with quality. The sound quality was quite good. Most importantly, everything works, which isn't a low standard given my experience with the other radio. It even has an plug for earphones. My daughter has had it for several months now, and she is very happy with it. I think this is the best CD clock radio that you can find under $300.

Emerson AM/FM Clock Radio with CD Player and Remote Control – CKD2330 Review

(More customer reviews)This is such a bad product. I seriously want my money back, but it's not even worth the hassle. Luckily, I decided to use it as my CD player in my bedroom, and not as an alarm clock. I keep this thing all the way across the bedroom from my bed, and I STILL have to drape heavy clothing over it every night in order to be able to sleep, and I am NOT a sensitive sleeper. The display is so freakishly bright, it actually illuminates my entire (rather large) bedroom with it's horrible blue glow. There's some garbage about an "automatic dimmer" in the description of this product, but that is pure bull. It's supposed to dim when the lights go out, but if anything, it actually gets brighter. I cannot imagine how anyone can sleep with this next to their beds. Furthermore, what's the point of the horrifically bright time display if you can't ever read the time unless you're facing it directly face-on, and about an inch from the display? Whoever designed this is an idiot, as the bright blue background almost completely obscures the black numbers that show the time. The colors are too close in tone or brightness for there to be enough contrast to read what the display says.
Another problem, and this one is even "funnier" than the aforementioned: as we speak, my month-old Emerson clock-radio is speeding through the time, literally. It has some weird tick, where, if you use the remote control to control the volume, it affects the minutes part of the time as well as the volume. If you hold down the up or down volume buttons for any amount of time, the minutes start freaking out uncontrollably. For instance, as I write, my clock is going through 11 am over and over and over again at warp speed. It would be funny if I didn't pay for this piece of garbage.
All of that being said, the CD player in my experience is serviceable. Mine plays burned CDs as well as normal ones. The sound quality is decent for such a small player.
If you are thinking of getting this as a clock or alarm, please think carefully: the screwed up volume-time function, the horribly bright display, and the almost complete lack of contrast between the time digits and background make this virtually unuseable as an alarm clock.

(More customer reviews)When I got the item I was pleased with the look, and the wall-mount installation looked great. BUT...the sound quality is not what I expected from a Jenson product. Not enough watts I guess, and the speakers have like NO base reflex. The sound is tinny, and when you turn it up it just gets more annoying. Also was disappointed that the remote control can only advance, pause, or rewind the songs on a CD. The remote can not adjust volume or do anything not related to CD playback. Also was disappointed that there is no way to have FM STATION PRE-SETS. The FM is a rotary dial for tuning. The station frequency does show up on the LED screen which is cool. Also...you would think the clock would stay lit up when the unit is off. it is, after all, an alarm clock as well. It doesn't stay lit. SO...feature-wise...this is a very disappointing product. Looks-wise...Great! You make the call. What do ya get for under 40 bucks? I should have spent more.

(More customer reviews)I was not certain of the value for money when I purchased the Sony CMT Hi Fi but from the reviews on Amazon I thought it was a safe purchase. I must say it more then met my expectations, the unit is compact but well designed and took up 1/3 less space than the unit it replaced (a "boombox" with two separate speakers) and weighed 2/3rds less. The sound quality is equal if not better and the iPod docking unit is seamless to use. I was impressed with the digital radio and the CD player is probably the least of the package but still works well. Overall I am very satisfied with the product.

(More customer reviews)I ordered this from another etailer since Amazon didn't have it. It's a great unit. CD player sounds very good, but not great with no extra buzzing or noises. You can select shuffle CD and can also select the particular track you want the alarm to start on. Radio has very good reception and sound. I have not used the buzzer yet so can't comment on how ok or annoying it is. The manual says it beeps and progressively changes. You can set the CD, radio, or buzzer for the alarm...one, all, or any combination of the three each with it's own seperate wake up time. I start with a soothing CD, then NPR comes on, and then the buzzer is the final backup in case I'm really lazy that day. The display is very good, visible from variety of angles and not so bright as to be annoying at night. The unit in general feels well made and I expect it will last awhile. Good value.

(More customer reviews)When you need to get up, you need to know that the alarm clock will go off and won't blink 12:00am at 9am after a power outage, or anything like that.
There is NO BATTERY BACKUP! Keep this in mind if you are using it as a bedside clock. In an office, it's fine, but it's not the wisest design having an alarm clock with no battery back up.
The only protection it has is a 60 second clock memory. So if you're power outage goes on longer than 60 seconds...don't expect to make it to work/class on time.
It looks nice though, and is an attractive clock/cd/radio... but that's about it.

Sony CMT-FX300i - Micro system with iPod cradle - radio / CD / MP3 - gloss black Review

(More customer reviews)Sony has been making micros for over a decade by now, and with digital music almost completely replacing the likes of cassette tapes and even CDs to some, the AV manufacturer has been slowly removing tape decks from their smaller systems. The FX300i is no exception. Some of Sony previous year's offerings, like the CMT-EH15 and EH25, still comes with a capable, albeit high profit margin tape deck that reminds you of those boomboxes from the 80s.
The primary purpose of the FX300i is to dock and charge your iPODs, and Sony could not be making this statement any clearer. Without any support for iPhones, the device will generate alot of noise when an iPhone is docked to the system without the airplane mode switched on. There is also no support for USB playback or recording, which can be found on the FX300i's equally new cousin, the FX200, which focuses on USB playback.
Compared to its older siblings, the FX300i offers a surprisingly fuller sound, and this is true when it is put up against EH15, EH25 and a few models from 2007-2008 like the CMT-EH10. Sony doesn't seem to have added anything new to the main unit, which contain essentially face-lifted parts from EH15/EH10. A good way to repackage something old and sell it as something new. Therefore, what's most likely to be responsible for the FX300i's sound are the new 4 Ohm speakers. The new deminutive full range drivers(8cm diameter each) seem to be producing more bass than treble, which makes the system sound more fluid than the EH15/EH25/EH10. The speaker's model model number is SS-CFX200, which is the same as those for the FX200. Therefore, given that both unit outputs 5W+5W of audio, it should be safe to assume that FX300i sounds as good as the FX200.
There is a new feature that comes with the FX300i, although not an important one. The system is now programmed to automatically shut down in 30 mins if it is not doing anything (no music, no signal). This function, called Auto Standby, may be switched on or off.
So here's a list of things for the FX300i that you may want to be aware of before deciding on buying this system:
1) Ipod support up to 2009's classic, but no support for iphone. The system will charge your iphones and ipods when switched on, however is not shielded from the GSM/3G signals.
2) Full Ipod/Iphone controls (on remote controller), including menu browsing, but menu browsing is very slow, as per any Ipod docks out there such as the JBL onstage IIIp.
3) No Ipod adaptors are given, so prepare to get one ready for your ipod.
4) Timer/Sleep functions as per any standard Sony micros.
5) No USB input.
6) One front line-in via a stereo 3.5mm jack and one 3.5mm headphone jack.
7) Amplifier output is 5W+5W RMS
8) DSG-X and preset EQs (Flat, Rock, Pop, Jazz) for sound control.
9) 8cm full-range drivers for two compact wooden speakers with frontal bass-reflex ports. Bass is very heavy around the 125-150Hz range, so do not expect deep thuds from this system unless you intend to pair it with better speakers. System support speakers with impedance 4 Ohms and above. Uses standard wire-clamps for speaker leads.
10) CD-RW support, including MP3 files recorded on CD-RWs. No ATRAC3 support.
11) No tape deck.

Crosley CR32 CD Cathedral Radio with CD - Paprika Review

(More customer reviews)My husband is an audiophile, and laughed at me when I said I wanted this CD/radio. Unlike him, I don't really care that much about sound quality. Not that it doesn't matter to me at all--it's just that HE has the big, nice sound system already, so I was happy to get something that would look nice in the living room and could play in the background while I was reading. I don't need or even like to play music very loud, so something small and pleasantly retro like this was just what I wanted.(We don't all care for 15 shelves worth of audio equipment and a gigantic subwoofer.) I was so excited!
As other reviewers have stated, it's a little difficult to tune in the radio. That was disappointing, but my CDs sounded nice enough, and the radio/CD player made me happy even to look at. It just seemed RIGHT to listed to Louis Armstrong through it, as if the beauty of the retro cathedral style cabinet made the sound more authentic. It was lovely! I was even considering getting another Crosley product for a different room, having fun paging through the catalog and anticipating what I would ask for for my birthday. I was SO happy.
... for about 7 months.
Then the right speaker blew. (Sound doesn't come out of the front speaker-looking area, but is stereo from the sides.) That it would blow surprised me, seeing as how I never, never listen to it at top volume, nowhere near. The guarantee that comes with this item is limited, and wouldn't cover the problem. Reasonable person that I am, I still wasn't too upset--I was just disappointed a bit. After all, my husband is an audiophile, as I mentioned, and he could replace the speakers for me if we could get replacements.With that happy thought, he wrote Crosley to find out if they sold replacement speakers, or if they had recommendations for replacements. He never heard back. He wrote twice, responsibly checked his spam folder just in case, but NOTHING.
So... I wrote. This is the third time they had been contacted by us. Keep in mind we were both polite: simply explained what had happened, and asked if there were recommended speakers so we could take care of the problem ourselves. I don't care about sound quality that much as I said, but it is unlistenable with all the static in the blown speaker.
Was the third time the charm? No. I got no response, either. Even if Crosley had no recommendations, it seems to me it would be polite to write back. Is this an indication of the quality of their customer service, or the quality of their product... or both? That is, after having looked for speakers ourselves, we don't seem to be able to locate any that will fit. We can find the correct wattage and so forth; however, there is not much clearance inside the case. Every speaker we looked at--and we have spent considerable time looking--seemed to be too deep to fit. So far as we can tell, the speakers are a proprietary make and substitutions that will fit can't be found elsewhere.
I loved this item while it worked. However, unless you are the type of person that can pay $80 or $100 every few months to get a new one ($80 if you get it on sale), don't buy this product. The quality is apparently so poor, the manufacturer, Crosley, is embarrassed to respond even to polite inquiry. I was their perfect target customer--someone who didn't care so much about perfect sound, but who preferred instead the vintage look with just acceptable sound quality--and I am terribly unhappy with them. I'm so unhappy, I'm wasting a lovely Saturday morning writing this review.
Shame on them. I certainly won't be buying another Crosley product for a different room as I had once fondly planned, and I hope I have saved you the trouble and expense of buying ANY Crosley product.
For shame.

(More customer reviews)...there is no digital tuner so no 5 station presets; no "birdsong, gushing river" or any other nature sounds; no headphone jack; and sure as heck no freakin' subwoofer (not that any subwoofer small enough to fit in a clock radio wouldn't sound like crap)! WAKE UP, Amazon, and check your facts!!!
However other than that, this is the best fifty dollar CD clock radio on the market (which says a lot about how sad the CD clock radio market is, at that). For one thing, it actually has a fairly attractive (or at the very least, inoffensive) form factor, compared to the gaudy-colored cutesy round models Sony and other makers have come out with in the past---are these industrial designers smoking crack or what?
Also I was impressed at how easy all the controls were to use---didn't even have to look at the instructions, it was that intuitive and also very ergonomic. This is about the main thing that Sony still does better than anyone else, provide ease of use. The green LED display is just the right size and brightness, and a big improvement over the horrible backlit LCD displays that many other clock radios have. There is an external FM antenna that helps somewhat---better would've been a detachable external antenna so you could hook up a better one to it. The adjustable "nap" timer is a very handy feature, as was the wake-to-CD alarms (2 of them) allowing you to choose which track you want to wake up to on the CD. I just use George Winston's "Winter" CD, it's nice and soothing. Even the buzzer on this thing is fairly pleasant.
I bought this mainly because I was tired of being jolted every morning by my Phillips clock radio's air-raid siren of a buzzer, and also because my city (Houston) has the absolute crappiest FM stations you could imagine.
What I really wish though is that Sony, Panasonic and other audio makers would just start putting alarm clocks in their minisystems so you could wake up to some half-decent sound quality music. This Sony is still way better than the Timex (hopeless!), Emerson, and other cheap generic garbage that Walmart sells but what can you really expect from tiny 1 watt per channel speakers?
Keep your expectations low though and this clock radio won't be too bad. I still could never bring myself to fork over three hundred bucks for the Cambridge cd clock radio.
What I really wish this clock radio had: 1. a 9V battery backup like my Phillips had, 2. having the CD, radio, or buzzer gradually increase in volume early in the morning, 3. MP3 capability (the box says it can play CD-Rs but don't know which format exactly), and ESPECIALLY 5. a headphone jack so that I could hook up this thing to some cheap self-powered computer speakers which would be a HUGE sound quality improvement.

Sony ICF-CD543RM Kitchen CD Clock Radio (Silver) Review

(More customer reviews)I tried other radios in the kitchen, but none could compare to the sound of this unit. FM reception's pretty good too. The "kitchen friendly" controls are easy to clean. Mounting is done by drilling three holes, for which it has a paper template, and it has adjustable spacers to accommodate cabinets with recessed bottoms. It's about 11-1/2 inches deep and just an inch or two wider.
I don't seem to get any weather band channels, and the TV channels I get are very quiet so I have to remember to turn the sound down before switching to FM or CD. The timer's a nice feature for the kitchen but seconds can't be set and it takes a lot of turning to get to longer bake times, like an hour or more. The magnetic remote's also nice but you have to be able to see the sensor and stay within about 45 degrees for it to work.
Overall I'm very happy with it. The sound is great and makes spending all day around the kitchen less lonely, plus it doesn't take up any counter space. I do feel like I paid a small premium for the name Sony though.

I especially like that the time can be set forward and backward and that the time display is easy to see without the light from it keeping me awake. (More customer reviews)#1 disappointment: This unit does NOT have a digital synthesized AM/FM Tuner; it uses an old fashioned tuning wheel. Sony tries to compensate by using AFC on FM, but with all of the stations here (near LA), it probably would drift into another station with changes in temperature during the night. AM is very susceptible to AM interference and not very sensitive.
The power backup only holds for one minute; does NOT have a battery backup.
Audio power is only 1.2 watts per channel (3in. speakers), but sounds adequate. (Spec is 10% distortion)
Choice of CD music track for wakeup and dual alarms are nice features.
I will upgrade to a better unit.
