Homedics SS-4500 SoundSpa Classic Clock Radio, Silver Review

This clock is what we were looking for BUT it is too bright, it's like haveing a night light on your ceiling. I wouldn't recomend for a light sleeper. The beam of light that comes from the clock is so bright, I could see hair from my dog floating by in the middle of the night. we moved it across the room which made it a little better but STILL BRIGHT. Maybe I'll put it in my daughters room, she still sleeps with a night light.

Blue Hat Kids Projection Alarm Clock, Blue Review

Blue Hat Kids Projection Alarm Clock, Blue
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This clock is the worst piece of junk that I've ever purchased. I bought this for my son a few months ago and took it out of his room tonight and told him that he could use my alarm clock until I buy him a new one. This piece of junk has numerous issues:
- the batteries do not work as back-up. If the clock gets unplugged, the batteries will not back up the electrical power
- the clock will reset itself and force you to reenter the date, time, etc.. by simply just scooting the clock over to dust, etc. Evidently, the cord that plugs into the bottom of the clock is ultra-sensitive
- it is very difficult to turn of the alarm when it goes off. Rather than switching the alarm to "off", you have to click about three specific buttons to shut the stupid thing off. And, this is supposed to be made for kids??
Do yourself a favor and don't waste your money on this thing. You'll end up wasting more money by buying a replacement a few months later.

Blue Hat Toy Company Kid's Projection Alarm Clock, Blue Review

Blue Hat Toy Company Kid's Projection Alarm Clock, Blue
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The idea for this clock sounds good: a rocket ship design with the ability to project the time and a space image on the ceiling or wall. The Blue Hat Toy Company, however, must have given their Chinese manufacturer a generic requirements list, and instructed them to start pumping out units, without ever testing them first.
Within 5 minutes of plugging in the clock, I found major flaws in usability. First, if you want to pivot the time and space images, so they are over your kid's bed or on the opposite wall, the images are upside-down. The only place you can really put the clock is directly next to (or above) the kid's head, so they can see the time in the correct orientation. Maybe I'm the only parent who puts their kid's headboard against a wall, instead of the center of the room...
Second, you cannot turn the alarm off without going into the alarm or time settings. Pushing any other button will activate the 5-minute snooze setting (who wants their kid hitting the snooze button every 5 minutes, when they are supposed to be getting up?) The alarm never turns off on its own. How will a sleepy 3 year-old remember which button to hold for 2 seconds in order to turn off the alarm?
Third, the lack of permanent lighting for the display is a major omission (the product images make it look like it is an included feature). If the time is not being projected, the kid has no idea what time it is unless they start pushing buttons on the unit to activate the light for a few seconds.
I'm glad I didn't keep this for more than an hour, or else I might have run into the problems that others have reported: bulbs burning out, projector not working after being knocked over, etc.

jWin JL365 Dual Alarm Clock with Projection and AM/FM Radio (Black) Review

jWin JL365 Dual Alarm Clock with Projection and AM/FM Radio (Black)
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The good:
- Nice big display, with blue digits, instead of usual red ones.
- External audio input for your mp3 player.
- Digital tuner with radio stations.
- Two independent alarms.
- Relatively cheap compared to other projection alarm clocks
The bad:
- Display too bright, and no way to make it dimmer
- Can't rotate projection display
- Can't focus projection display
- Have to set time on projection display separately
- CAN'T ADJUST VOLUME OF THE ALARM
I wish I knew you can't adjust volume of the alarm before I purchased the clock, because it's a deal breaker for me. The thing is loud as hell, and there is no way to make it quieter. Next time I'll buy one of those alarm clocks, that gradually increase the volume of the alarm until you hit snooze.
Bottom line? I wouldn't recommend it.
UPDATE (12/15/2010):
Maybe my particular unit is broken, but it seems to have a problem where every now and then, the screen turns white and stops displaying any time at all. The clock becomes unresponsive, and unplugging/plugging it in doesn't fix the problem. After a few days it starts working again. The first time it happened was a weekend so no biggie. The second time it happened during the week, and I ended up oversleeping for work. The clock promptly ended up in a garbage can. I'm looking for a replacement - will post it here when I find it.

La Crosse Technology WT-5220U-IT Projection Alarm Clock with Indoor/Outdoor Temperature Review

La Crosse Technology WT-5220U-IT Projection Alarm Clock with Indoor/Outdoor Temperature
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
We absolutely LOVE this thing. It's so nice to be able to look up at the ceiling and know what the time is and whether to pull the covers up tighter and snuggle a little longer. I've had a projection alarm before that was in a blue light. It was so bright you could read by it and I found myself covering it up to block the light. This one has a soft red light that doesn't burn your retinas through your eyelids. We live in a very cold climate, this winter even more so than usual. Being able to see the outside temperature without having to even roll over has been nice. The only issue is if the electricity is turned off you have to set the temp sensor again. Other than that, it's so great my husband wants to get them as Christmas presents for his employees next year.

You'll know if it's cold outside even before you get out of bed in the morning. For that matter, with the La Crosse Projection Alarm Clock, you won't even have to turn your head. Just a quick glance at the ceiling tells you the time and temperature. The clock monitors indoor and outdoor temperature, relative humidity, and the time in hours, minutes, and seconds on a clear digital screen. Or use the projection feature to display the info on the ceiling or wall. Use the projection arm to adjust the display toward any flat surface you can see from bed. Included sensor sends wireless signal to the station from up to 330 feet. Constantly updates as often as every 4 seconds for immediate weather information. No assembly required. Atomic time and date automatically resets to Daylight Savings Time. Alarm includes snooze function. Receiver measures 3.6 x 5.6 x 1.4 inches. Operates with the included AC power adapter or 4 AA Alkaline batteries (batteries sold separately).

Magnasonic MAG-MM178K AM/FM Projection Clock Radio with Dual Alarm, Auto Time Set/Restore, Motion Activated Snooze, Temperature Display and Battery Backup Review

Magnasonic MAG-MM178K AM/FM Projection Clock Radio with Dual Alarm, Auto Time Set/Restore, Motion Activated Snooze, Temperature Display and Battery Backup
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This is a nice clock, it has all the feature I am looking for, but some detail feel could be polished
PRO:
1. It has dual alarm, configurable as weekday or weekend
2. projector can be turn to right direction
3. IR sensor works good
4. It has AM/FM ( I am not that kind favor of it though, but believe this is a feature some people may like)
CON:
1. Size is bulky than I expected,
2. There are extra two thin wire hanging out ugly. these are temp sensor and FM antenna, this is bad and really ugly to have two extra wire other than the power cord.
3. The projector doesn't have information other than time
4. The projector can not be turn on independent to the LED window, In the night, I like the LED off but projector on, but this unit can not do this.
5. The unit manual say automatic time setting. I didn't see it has any indicator to show it pick up atomic clock radio signal, and I see it show the time offset to my other atomic radio control clock, didn't get it what is "automatic" here.
6. FM tuning is not smooth, the switch is very sensitive, and a careless soft touch can change the signal. And the band can not be locked correct.
7. There are no FM/AM presets
8. speaker does not deliver good sound.
Although I list more point of improvement it could have than the PRO bullets, overall, I believe this is a good one. Hopefully it is also reliable over a long time. This need wait a while to see.

La Crosse Technology WT-5360U Atomic Projection Alarm Clock Review

La Crosse Technology WT-5360U Atomic Projection Alarm Clock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Not surprisingly, I chose this clock for 3 reasons: it sets itself, it projects the time on the ceiling/wall, and it's quite inexpensive. After a needlessly painful setup (more on that later) it set its own time, and the time projected on the ceiling is easy to read with my glasses on (just barely readable w/o glasses).
The first problem I encountered was plugging the power supply into the clock. It uses a standard coaxial DC power connector that plugs into a socket on the bottom of the clock. Unfortunately, the hole through which you access the socket is not only much larger than the socket, but so much larger than the socket housing (a box containing the socket connector) that unless you have sharp eyes and carefully align the plug with the socket, the plug will slip into the gap between the socket housing and the hole in the clock case.
After getting the power connected, I left for work, and when I returned, the clock showed the correct time--only off by 3 hours. OK, so I needed to set the time zone. There are no buttons labeled "time zone", "TZ" or anything similar. A quick check of the manual (don't lose that manual!) revealed an unintuitive process for setting the time zone (typical of devices that don't have enough buttons):
1. Hold down the "Mode" button for 3 seconds. The currently selected time zone will be displayed.
2. Click the "Mode" button until your time zone appears.
3. Click the "Snooze" button.
Despite its poor design features, this clock basically works as advertised and is inexpensive. Since most of the time, you won't need to touch it, if you can read relatively dim, red 3" numbers on your ceiling, then it's probably a good choice. Just don't lose the manual!

No more patting around for the glasses to check the time after than early morning alarm. This projection clock beams huge digits, visible to the blurriest of eyes, on walls, ceilings and other smooth surfaces. Every time it's plugged in or turned on, the clock sets itself for precision time by receiving radio signals from the official US Atomic Clock. That means it also shifts automatically to and from Daylight Savings Time, so there's no more showing up to work an hour late or early twice a year. The unit also reports indoor temperatures and features an LED backlight for easy readouts without using the projection feature. The projection arm rotates for proper viewing at any angle-without rolling over. Open the eyes. Read the time. Close the eyes. An automatic focus mechanism presents clear readouts on any smooth surface. And, a perpetual calendar helps you stay on schedule. Hang it on the wall or set it up on a desk with the detachable stand. AC power adapter included.

We looked at several projection clocks on the internet before choosing this one. When we plugged it in, the projection was horrible! It had about a 3x3 red square that you couldn't even see the time. Then when we wrote the company about returning it, they first refused the return, saying we "damaged" the package. I would like to know how am I supposed to get the lousy clock out w/out even opening it?!? Finally they did accept the return and got the money back.

Timex T736S Dual Alarm Clock Radio with Time Projector and Jumbo Display Review

Timex T736S Dual Alarm Clock Radio with Time Projector and Jumbo Display
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Four and a Half ACCURATE Stars! This dual-alarm clock, with battery backup and manually-tuned AM/FM radio, sets the time "out of the box" when you plug it in: for the eastern time zone: alarming perfectly in sync with my iPhone. It has large red numbers/letters that can be seen, at night, from across the room. The AM/FM radio has very good sound for music or talk radio. The dual alarms allow for 'everyday', 'weekdays only' and 'weekends only' alarms using buzzer, radio, or "soothing sounds". The time projector can be manually rotated thru 90 degrees for wall or ceiling projection of large red 12 inch to 24 inch numbers; and the display can be inverted, focused, or turned off completely. Wake up at night and see the time on the ceiling: no eyeglasses needed for me! If they had added a 'weather' radio band that my other clock radio has, and an AM/FM remote, it would have earned this clock radio the extra half-star rating star, but that 'other' clock radio doesn't project time on the ceiling and it blinks after a power outage while the Timex automatically resets the time. I like this Timex T736S very much and it's now 'pulling duty' in a primary bedroom. Highly Recommended! Four and a half PRECISE Stars! (Rating upgraded on 8/19/2011 after a power outage that proved it's auto reset value.)

I actually have this clock. The ceiling display can be rotated from 0-90 degrees, or there it a button to rotate 180degrees -- giving you 360 degrees. Its sittin on my nightstand, approx. 12 feet from me, right now, and I can read the LCD display from here. It's designed to not be a bright light when you're sleeping, and when the alarm goes off it auto-lights the LED and the LCD displays, so you can see it. :)

OREGON SCIENTIFIC RM313PNA Self-Setting Projection Clock Review

OREGON SCIENTIFIC RM313PNA Self-Setting Projection Clock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
For the money, this clock is a really good deal. However, it has it's shortcomings that left me a little disappointed.PROS: First off, I've never had a projection-style clock before, so I find this feature to be really cool. The projector is set to project a digital display of the time onto the ceiling above you, which it does with surprising clarity and brightness. You won't be able to see the display at all in even a low-lit room, but that's fine, because you'll only really be looking at in when lying in bed. And the fact that you can switch it to project constantly, rather than having to slap a button, is really nice.
The next thing I like most about the clock is the size. My previous alarm clock was an RCA PoS that was huge, heavy, and had a non-functional CD player in it shortly after using it. Though that clock had its pros, this Oregon Projection Clock is nice because it takes up less space on the desk next to my bed, and it's basically only what you need, with no shiny bells and whistles you don't need.
The thermometer is a nice add-on to the clock. Obviously I didn't buy it just for that, and it's doubtful that will be the deciding factor for anyone, but it's a pretty accurate thermometer that displays to the tenth place, and it's useful for seeing just how hot or just how cold it actually is in your room, which can help with setting the thermostat.
Though I liked the constantly low-lit display on my previous alarm clock, which wasn't too bright or dark, this clock makes up for not having a constant back light by having the constant projection feature. Now you don't even have to roll over to see the time, as they advertise! And the back-light this clock does have, while a bit too bright to someone half asleep in a dark room, is nice and easy to read.CONS: My biggest complaint is that the projector is fixed into position in the clock; you can't adjust where or at what angle it projects. This wouldn't be so bad in and of itself, except that for some reason they fixed the projector so that it projects the time parallel with the face of the clock. In other words, it's displayed at a 90 degree angle to your viewpoint when lying in bed looking up at it. The only way that the display would be a normal, right-side-up view would be if it was positioned behind you, say on a headboard. But then you couldn't easily get to the clock in the morning. Maybe it's petty, but the lack of an ability to adjust the projector is a bit frustrating.
The next thing that disappointed me is the self-setting feature, via radio communication with the Atomic Clock in Colorado. I'm not sure how well that feature works, because I can't get my alarm clock to pick-up a signal. Now, in all fairness, I live in a bunker of an apartment, on the bottom floor, which is half underground, but I couldn't even get it to pick-up a signal when I forced a manual search while holding it up to the window, and I can usually get even my GPS to work doing that. I'm sure it's a nice feature to have . . . if you can get a signal.
The final thing that disappoints me a little is that there is only one alarm, and it has a pre-set 8 minute snooze. Now, obviously, it does advertise that it has only one alarm (or at least, doesn't have two), which is okay, but not being able to shorten the snooze time is a little disappointing. I'm not sure about others, but I can be deep in sleep again in an 8 minute time span. I used my previous clock's dual alarms to create two alarms set 5 minutes apart to ensure I woke up, so the lack of any alarm customization in a clock billed as an alarm clock is a bit frustrating.
Final verdict: for about $30, this is a good deal for a clock, and a great way to enter into the projection-style clock market. The atomic clock feature, if you can get it to receive a signal, is a sweet deal for the price too, and so is the indoor thermometer built-in. However, there's some things that, even for this low price, could be improved without changing much.

Oregon Scientific Rm313pa Exactset Fixed Projection Alarm Clock Review

Oregon Scientific Rm313pa Exactset Fixed Projection Alarm Clock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Most of my life I've had early shifts for my occupation (i.e. being into work at 6:00 am or earlier). I used to have a clock that didn't have a battery backup nor did it keep the correct time. I saw this model clock that had both plus the time projection on the ceiling so my wife didn't have to try to roll me over to see the clock, so I decided to give it a try. The clock looks a bit futuristic, but that is its function. The exact time feature is great. I set the houses clocks to it whenever the power goes out, which is regularly (where in a rural town). The battery backup is another great feature that I've never had prior to this. The only drawbacks that I have with the clock is that in order to project the time on the ceiling so that you can read it on a decent angle, is to turn the clock so that you can't the time on its face. You either get to see the one on the ceiling or you get the face of the clock, not both. Another drawback is the buttons on the clock don't make much sense when you need to program the alarm. Once you know the buttons to push, its easy, but they aren't marked well. Hope this review is helpful for you.

Emerson CKS3516 SmartSet Dual-Alarm Clock Radio with Time Projection System Review

Emerson CKS3516 SmartSet Dual-Alarm Clock Radio with Time Projection System
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
This review refers to the CKS3528 model, which I purchased from Amazon's partner, Target. The only difference between my model and this one is that the clock projection has a selectable color filter on the CKS3528. This unit listed here does not.
I purchased this clock for the large digit display and projection functions. So far both are working out quite nicely. The display is not too bright at night, when the dimmer is set to low. It is still quite readable in a lit room. The projection is too dim to read if the room is lit, but it works nicely in the dark. I am nearsighted, but I have no problem reading the ceiling display with my glasses off at night. I'd guess the digits are about 10 inches high on my ceiling. The projection is also not so bright that it lights up the room or keeps me awake.
The smart set function is little more than a preset internal clock that lives off a lithium battery when it is not plugged in. The manual says the battery will last 3 years even if the unit is never plugged in, and should last 5+ years when used normally. The clock allows you to change the time settings yourself (if you like your clock 5-10 minutes fast, or if the time ever drifts) and the internal memory will keep the new time setting. This is a nice improvement over the RCA version that I replaced, which had drifted about 2 minutes off and could not be corrected.
The clock knows 7 times zones: Atlantic, Eastern, Central, Mountain, Pacific, Yukon, and Hawaiian. Since you can change the internal time memory anyway, I imagine it would be pretty easy to use this in any zone and just fix the time shift once. However, the clock obeys the 2007 US daylight savings time rules: starting 2nd Sunday of March, ending 1st Sunday of November. There does not appear to be a way to turn DST off. So, if your state or country does not follow these rules, you'll have to change the time or timezone every time the DST changes do not match your area.
The radio is set by an analog dial. The dial indicator lights up when the clock is plugged in, but it's still not easy to tell by the display what channel number you have set. It doesn't seem to drift very badly, but my chosen wake-up station is pretty strong in my area. I'd have preferred a digital tuner.
There are two alarms. Each can be set to wake by buzzer or radio. Each alarm can be set to run for 7-days, 5-days (Mon-Fri), or 2-days (Sat-Sun). The buzzer alarms wake by crescendo, that is, they start softly and increase in volume. I can't comment on how loud they get, since I don't use buzzer alarms. The wake by radio function works nicely, coming on directly to the volume that you have preset. To turn off the buzzer alarms, you have to find one of the tiny (1) or (2) alarm buttons among the many on top of the unit. To turn off the radio alarm, you can also hit the much larger Radio On/Off button on the right end of the unit. The snooze button is large and easy to find in the middle. Snooze is fixed at 9 minutes.
I recommend this clock to anyone who likes to wake up to a radio, and who lives in a US timezone following the new DST rules. My only complaint is the lack of a digital radio tuner.

Oregon Scientific BAR339PA Projection Atomic Clock with Weather Forecaster Review

Oregon Scientific BAR339PA Projection Atomic Clock with Weather Forecaster
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I had an older Oregon Scientific clock (atomic, projection, weather) that works perfectly. It projects the time in crisp red which is the right brightness - you can clearly see it at night, and it does not illuminate the whole room. Also one can rotate the displayed image 360 degrees. My only complaints with that clock were the lack of temperature display on the ceiling and the hard to read clock face (old style LED - dark gray on light gray). One can illuminate the clock face by pressing a button but cannot permanently turn illumination on.
I needed another clock so I decided that this one should be much better, especially with the temperature being shown on the ceiling. That new clock was a huge disappointment. First it is indeed too bright - it is like a projector that illuminates the whole room, although one can get used to it. The image cannot be focused very well, and it has only two positions at 180 degrees from each other. Because of that I can either have the image on the ceiling right (but cannot see well the clock face), or have the clock turned so that I can see it (but the image on the ceiling is at an angle). Another huge problem is the illumination of the clock face. When turned off it is difficult to read but unlike the old model you can turn it on. And there the problems begin. Some designer kid has had fun designing the display with animations and color changes that are supposed to track better the weather changes. So at night, while you are trying to sleep and get used to the bright bluish light from the projector, suddenly color flashes start playing around. My wife almost got a heart attack when this happened for the first time.
The verdict - just returned it.

Options include 12- or 24-hour forecasting, 180-degree projection rotation, and memory function for daily high and low temps. The clock also includes a crescendo alarm and an 8-minute snooze feature. Using a radio signal, it checks itself regularly against the U.S. Atomic Clock and resets automatically for Daylight Savings Time.
