Clock display is not lit and is not visible until you get within 6" range. Manual advises to install with mounting template which was not included. After a month of contacting supplier, mfgr., and Amazon, mfgr. sent me the template. CD drawer cannot be opened except when CD function is selected. ph

Sony ICF-CD543RM Kitchen CD Clock Radio (Silver) Review

(More customer reviews)I tried other radios in the kitchen, but none could compare to the sound of this unit. FM reception's pretty good too. The "kitchen friendly" controls are easy to clean. Mounting is done by drilling three holes, for which it has a paper template, and it has adjustable spacers to accommodate cabinets with recessed bottoms. It's about 11-1/2 inches deep and just an inch or two wider.
I don't seem to get any weather band channels, and the TV channels I get are very quiet so I have to remember to turn the sound down before switching to FM or CD. The timer's a nice feature for the kitchen but seconds can't be set and it takes a lot of turning to get to longer bake times, like an hour or more. The magnetic remote's also nice but you have to be able to see the sensor and stay within about 45 degrees for it to work.
Overall I'm very happy with it. The sound is great and makes spending all day around the kitchen less lonely, plus it doesn't take up any counter space. I do feel like I paid a small premium for the name Sony though.

Sony ICF-CD553RM Under Cabinet Kitchen CD Clock Radio (Silver) Review

The dial/knob is NOT for volume or tuning, which is somewhat counterintuitive. Other than that, no flaws.
Overview:
I installed this radio just a few weeks ago. Install was extremely easy. The included template made drilling the 4 holes an exact science. And the height-adjustable legs made the fit perfect and were very simple to place and adjust, and using these the unit should fit under any cabinet setup.

It does look nice, which is important in a kitchen, and we just remodeled ours, so this looks the part.

Functionality is generally very good. Like I mentioned under weaknesses, the knob is used for the timer, which is not how most radios are set up. But we've already gotten over that. Radio is easy to use, including setting the presets and such. Likewise for the TV and weather stations. I haven't had much trouble with reception, but that will depend entirely on your own situation. The CD player is easy to use as well.

And the unit sounds good. For a small sound system, and one that is mounted under a cabinet, which is not the most acoustically perfect area, is sounds good. And the enhanced "MegaBass" and "MegaExpand" features do help quite a bit. I tend to keep them on all of the time.

All-in-all, I am very pleased with this unit.

(More customer reviews)My review is based on a refurbished product that I won in an online auction for much lower price. I am very satisfied with the product considering the amount I have paid for it. But, I am giving only 3 stars considering the real price of the product.
It is true that the mounting template that comes with the product is wrong. I had to make my own template. However, the mounting hardware includes three sets of spacers and two sets of screws that you can use in any combination to suit to your cabinet. Mine worked very well and is quite stable. I like the fact that it does not occupy any space on my kitchen counter top.
My wife said that the CD didn't work at one point. Then when I checked it, it was working fine. FM reception is not satisfactory. One of our favorite stations is not picked up. Manual says that the power cable should be stretched (I believe it acts as antenna), but I don't like the cable hanging all over the kitchen counter.
The instruction manual could be improved. Product is much bulkier for the sound it produces. There is a holder for the remote control at the bottom. It is still not clear to me as to how I can place the remote in the holder. (Manual says nothing about this.) The way I have put it now makes the buttons on the remote press against the bottom surface of the product. You must use only the remote control to utilize some of the features such as setting the presets.
Overall, I like the product, but they could have done a much better job.

Sony ICF-CDK70 Under Cabinet Kitchen Clock Radio with CD-Changer Review

(More customer reviews)I have to come clean. I wrote a scathing review of this unit earlier today. Last night, I set this up in our kitchen, but after fumbling for a couple hours to get decent reception from the ac cord/antenna, I gave up. Static and poor audio from every station on the fm dial -- and we live well within the bounds of Washington DC's radio coverage (and get great reception from all of our other radios and stereos). Well, joy of the internet! I read that refrigerators can interfere with other electronics that share the same outlet and can even interfere with electronics that are simply in the vicinity. As it turns out, I had indeed plugged the radio into the same outlet as the fridge and while I had tried everything to improve receptio last night -- even adding and extension cord to increase the "length" of the ac antenna -- it never occurred to me to try a different outlet. Sure enough, that did it. Problem solved. It turns out circuits with light dimmers can have a similar effect as fridges, too. Bottom line, make sure to select your outlet carefully. Sounds great now -- what difference. Can't seem to change the rating on this, but would give it 4 stars now, at least.
