Blue Hat Toy Company Kid's Projection Alarm Clock, Blue Review

Blue Hat Toy Company Kid's Projection Alarm Clock, Blue
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The idea for this clock sounds good: a rocket ship design with the ability to project the time and a space image on the ceiling or wall. The Blue Hat Toy Company, however, must have given their Chinese manufacturer a generic requirements list, and instructed them to start pumping out units, without ever testing them first.
Within 5 minutes of plugging in the clock, I found major flaws in usability. First, if you want to pivot the time and space images, so they are over your kid's bed or on the opposite wall, the images are upside-down. The only place you can really put the clock is directly next to (or above) the kid's head, so they can see the time in the correct orientation. Maybe I'm the only parent who puts their kid's headboard against a wall, instead of the center of the room...
Second, you cannot turn the alarm off without going into the alarm or time settings. Pushing any other button will activate the 5-minute snooze setting (who wants their kid hitting the snooze button every 5 minutes, when they are supposed to be getting up?) The alarm never turns off on its own. How will a sleepy 3 year-old remember which button to hold for 2 seconds in order to turn off the alarm?
Third, the lack of permanent lighting for the display is a major omission (the product images make it look like it is an included feature). If the time is not being projected, the kid has no idea what time it is unless they start pushing buttons on the unit to activate the light for a few seconds.
I'm glad I didn't keep this for more than an hour, or else I might have run into the problems that others have reported: bulbs burning out, projector not working after being knocked over, etc.

La Crosse Technology Wt-3102 Plastic 10 Analog Atomic Clock - Choose Finish Review

La Crosse Technology Wt-3102 Plastic 10 Analog Atomic Clock - Choose Finish
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I own 8 atomic clocks 5 of which are these LaCrosse brand clocks. Unfortunately, the only problems I've experienced are with the LaCrosse. The others have been problem free. Although I am very close to the Colorado transmitting station (Utah), some of my LaCrosse clocks have had a hard time picking up the atomic signal. I'd wake up in the morning or come home from work in the evening and notice several clocks were WAY off the correct time. (Sigh) I've had to reposition the clocks several times and ended up locating them in areas I really didn't want them. But I finally got all of the LaCrosse clocks to work at least.
Some of the LaCrosse clocks tick loud enough to disrupt sleeping. Others don't which is odd because they are all the SAME model. I've had to rotate clocks around until I found one quiet enough to put in my bedroom. But the quiet one has a signal receiving problem, so I had to put it on a different wall and move the artwork to a different place. It looks rather awkward now. (Sigh)
Of the eight atomic clocks I own, five didn't update at daylight savings time. You guessed it! All five were the LaCrosse clocks. (Sigh) The other three updated instantly. This was one of the main reasons I got the atomic clocks to begin with. I didn't want to hassle with updating the clocks manually. When I contacted LaCrosse support, I was told that it would take up to five days for the new time to register. Why LaCrosse clocks take five days while the other brand atomic clocks updated instantly is a mystery to me.It defeats the whole purpose of having the atomic clocks in the first place. I've inserted a new battery and reset the clock and waited a day or so with no DST update. I finally got tired of it and put them on a different time zone so they would reflect the correct time. Waiting almost a week for the clocks to update is ridiculous!
Overall, I'm rather disappointed. I've actually spent MORE time adjusting and tuning and moving the LaCrosse atomic clocks than I ever did with my old manual ones. LaCrosse brags about its "technology", yet I find it hugely lacking. I am amazed at the good reviews here. In fact, I bought all these clocks based upon them. I also gave several as gifts around Christmas time (I'm so sorry for those of you who got one from me).
I would certainly recommend another brand.
UPDATE 3/17/07: I contacted LaCrosse customer service and was told there was a "flaw" discovered in the engineering of this model which doesn't allow them to update the new DST. They claim they were just as "surprised" about this as their customers. They took my information and promised to arrange an "exchange" of clocks some time in April 2007. I hope they don't expect me to pay for shipping them. I own five of these models. I will update again in April when I get further information. Meantime, I changed the "time zone" to reflect the correct time. Luckily, I'm able to do that.

Apple iPod shuffle 1 GB Metal (2nd Generation) OLD MODEL Review

Apple iPod shuffle 1 GB Metal (2nd Generation) OLD MODEL
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My new shuffle gives me the ultimate coolness factor! The functionality is awesome too.
The shuffle arrived in it's beautiful transparent hard plastic box. It is really small, 1.5 inches long and 1 inch wide and the depth without the clip is hardly a few mm. The packaging is great too, even better than the last green cardboard box, and if you buy it from apple you can engrave it with your special message and also include a gift note which arrives in a tiny white envelope with a silver apple logo. My shuffle has my name and cell phone number engraved at the back from Apple in case it goes missing...though I don't think the finder would ever want to return it.
The "goodness" of a shuffle: I had always liked the Gen 1 shuffle too as it was small, and could slip into my tight jeans easily. Every time I wanted to change a song while at the airport in a queue, shopping for groceries or jogging I could just press the raised ring as I knew where each symbol was. I never needed to look at it or to take my attention away from what I was doing. It was light too, so much so that the weight of the headphones would sometimes nudge it out of my pocket and it would clatter to the floor. When I wanted to change the songs I just slipped it into my laptop. I had planned to buy a bigger iPod or even the Zune or Zenvision for my car so I could load my complete song collection (and get rid of XM) or for long plane trips where I might look at the screen. But for the everyday activities - jogs, work in the kitchen/garage/garden, or shopping trips I was happy with the low maintenance easy-breezy shuffle. So, the early pictures of the new shuffle blew me away ...I realized it was time to give away my old one...to my dad in this case, who loves listening to his books on shuffle, and doesn't want a screen.
The 2G shuffle: The new shuffle sounds just as good as the last one and the headphones tangle up less with a rubber slider. Did I tell you that the white and gray headphones co-ordinate perfectly with the gray and white look of the new shuffle? I love these little touches from Apple...(Can't believe Microsoft thinks the dull brown color of Zune is cool...) The port to connect the headphones is the same one you connect the docking station to load songs or charge it. The docking station is small too, white on top and barely 2 inches long and 1/2 inch wide with gray rubber base with an apple logo that prevents it from sliding around. You'll need to download the 35MB iTunes software to your computer (in case you don't have it already) and then load up your songs on the shuffle and you're ready to go. When it updates software the light indicator is red, orange when it uploads songs and green when you eject it and it's ready to play. The genius is that there is no need for a separate battery indicator as the same light glows orange for low charge or red if your battery is very low. In fact the same light will tell you with a blink sequence if there are no songs loaded. Press the forward button once and it will go back to the beginning of the same song, press it twice it goes to the next song. Similar function for the reverse button. If you press the play/pause button 3 times it goes to the beginning of the playlist...If you have your songs organized you can load the list you want according to your mood and these controls are enough to take you where you may want to go.
I was able to load 180 songs on to my shuffle, which is more than enough for a whole week for me. You have to use iTunes but all my songs are from CDs or downloads from other sites and I did not have a problem getting them on to the shuffle with the iTunes software.
The only downside I see is that I'll have to carry the docking station to charge it or upload songs if I travel, and while the docking station is really small, it makes the shuffle less self-contained. However, given the look of the new shuffle I don't mind too much. Especially now that I have a clip on the new shuffle, a feature I did not anticipate would make carrying the shuffle so much easier.
In fact, now I am in love with the convenience of the shuffle's clip that makes it easy to access and does not keep falling out with the weight of the headphones. The possibilities of where to clip it are endless. I've had it clipped to my T shirt neck, my office shirt front, on my leather coat lapel, or the jeans top pocket, or even my purse strap. Doesn't fall out and it's easier to reach the buttons.
By the way, all the people with negative reviews for 2G don't seem to be users. If I just want to make toast I don't want to buy an oven, even if it's available for the same price. If I wanted a screen on the shuffle I would get a Nano or something else. But the shuffle gives me what I want -not only does it play great music, it's cute enough to sit on my blouse. And does get some ooohs and aaaahs!
Now how about blue, red and pink metal shuffles...I need to color coordinate them with all my outfits! ;-)
Update Feb 28, 2007: So Apple listened to me (!) and they do have these in nice colors now...love that orange..
PS - If you like the review, check out my new Shuffle pics in the customer images. Please rate my review too and let me know if it was helpful for you.

Curtis CR4947 Vertical CD Clock Radio Review

Curtis CR4947 Vertical CD Clock Radio
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
My first CD clock radio was a Memorex. In my opinion, it faded out prematurely, so I did not replace it with a Memorex. I shopped for a low end unit with good reviews. This particular unit had two reviews. One was positive and the other was DOA. DOA is better than slow-death because it can be returned promptly, whereas, slow-death can kind of catch you unawares. I bought the unit in March '08 and have waited till Aug. '08 to comment, figuring a five month test period was a reasonable length.
I like this unit. Everything works and continues to work. I didn't buy it for the radio, but do use the CD player almost every day. The speakers aren't bad for their size. Controls are easy to find and use.
The upright design makes for an odd looking unit, but it is very convenient. It's as easy to use the unit while lying down as not.
The sleep bar is certainly easy to find -- you can't miss it. If you like to wake up slowly, this is very convenient. On the other hand, the alarm is very loud, but with the big sleep bar it's easy to stifle. It's certainly not an alarm you could sleep through.
If the power is turned on, the LCD is very bright. It needs to be on to operate the CD player or radio, but is not needed for the alarm clock. Turning the power off dims the LCD, which is preferable at night.
This unit takes up very little horizontal space, which is a plus. My old unit devoured available space, so I only ever kept it in one place. This unit fits into small areas, so I move it when needed. The back-up battery maintains settings during relocations.
Unless this thing suddenly dies without cause during the next few years, if I have to replace it sometime, I would definitely want the same unit.

Travel Tranquil Moments Alarm Clock Sound Therapy Machine Review

Travel Tranquil Moments Alarm Clock Sound Therapy Machine
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
When it works, this noise machine/clock is pretty nice. It keeps time and has a few nice sounds to choose from. It's a little pricey at $100, but if it would continue to work, I'd be fine with it.
The problem is that we've had three of these, and every one has died after a few weeks of use!
We bought the first one at a Brookstone in Vegas. It worked for that trip, but only lasted a few days into our next trip. The display went completely out, and it wouldn't respond at all - fresh batteries didn't do anything, plugging it in didn't do anything. I returned it and got a second from the Philadelphia airport - this one lasted a few weeks and died again! We returned that one at the King of Prussia Mall (Pennsylvania), and the same exact thing happened with the replacement they gave us after a few weeks!
I'm baffled that we've gone through 3 of these things, all gotten from completely different locations, and all have died after a few short weeks of use. This really is the worst quality item I've ever had. I would think that every one of these ever purchased would be returned, based on my experience with the three that I've had. I suppose it's possible that we just received 3 bad ones, and the majority are fine, but it seems extremely unlikely. There's no other constant with it - we've used different batteries, and have used them in different locations. We've kept them in their box, and haven't been rough on them at all. It's an alarm clock with noise - it's not like it's that complex of a piece of equipment. I truly am baffled at this piece of junk.
My advice is don't even consider buying one of these. I'm sure there's plenty of other choices out there at this price point that will do the same thing but will last longer than a month.
***EDIT 7/19/11
I've been able to bring this back to life a few times, thanks to a comment on this post from "E. Mead". He points out that there is a small reset button inside the battery compartment that can be pushed in to get it past the issue with the display blacking-out. I've been able to bring my what I thought was a dead unit back to life several times using this button. It continues to "die" about every 3rd time it's plugged in but at least now I can get it back. I bumped it up from 1 star to 2, but it's a close one... Still very unimpressed with this, but I am pleased that I can get some more life out of it. Thanks Mr. Mead for the info on the reset button!

Kassel™ Hand - carved Cuckoo Clock Review

Kasselâ„¢ Hand - carved Cuckoo Clock
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
I bought this clock at Big Lots for [...] . I was drunk.
It works like it should. It keeps accurate time. Runs on D batteries. The weights are just for show.
The ONLY thing I don't like about it is the way the bird chirps. I wanted the bird to chirp once for every hour which it does. However, it also plays a "waterfall" sound in the background when the bird chirps. The bird chirp has a slight echo so basically when it's 3 o'clock you'll hear 6 chirps. It's really only 3 but the echo makes it sound like 6.
My friends think I'm cuckoo and this item certifies it.
Oh and also, it has a built in light detector. The unit will NOT play any sounds at all if there is no light. This means I don't have to worry about that noise going off in the middle of the night. Not that it's that loud anyway but still. This allows me to have quiet time and preserve the battery a little longer. From what I understand, the D batteries that it takes will last approximately 12 months.
I purchased this along with a Leg Lamp and now my home is officially weird and I love it.
I am happy with my drunken purchase.

22700 - DUAL DIG. ALARM Review

22700 - DUAL DIG. ALARM
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
Pretty straight forward clock, but I must say it was a little bigger than I expected. It's going to be great when I lose my sight/hearing because the numbers are enormous and the alarm is super loud - even on the "low" setting it's a screamer. Fine with me, I'm getting used to it, but it was certainly a shock the first time. It has dual alarms, which is why I ordered it, and a super simple setup which is what I wanted. Minimal things to do on the interface, yay. I hate alarms that require reading the directions or have tiny little buttons all over them. This is a simple, utilitarian clock.

Average Reviews:

This product fits nicely under the cabinet...hardly noticeable. The radio has a quality sound. Don't expect to pick up AM stations out of the immediate area...one of my favorites is about 35 miles away but it has a lot of static. Too bad there is no way of extending the antenna. The directions say to rotate the radio till you get the best reception BUT that is impossible once you secured it to the cabinet. When the radio first arrived the cd player did not work. Amazon sent a new one quickly and had other one picked up. The CD on this one works fine.

This is a product that shouldn't be sold in this country. It was gifted from a friend but it does not work. I opened the case and found that the PC board is installed poorly. Specifically, the swinging arm is not moving without touching the case. I spent 15 minutes to look for a repair, but it seems no help.
If you're thinking to buy, good luck. It is poorly engineered and would not recommend for gift at all.

Elgin Electric LCD Projection Alarm Clock With Time Ready Technology, Black Review

Elgin Electric LCD Projection Alarm Clock With Time Ready Technology, Black

I returned this clock for 3 reasons. (1) I have 3 different atomics clocks in my house that all set the time automatically. This one did not, although the package and instructions said it would, even though they did not use the word, "atomic". (2) The only way to project the time right-side up is to put the clock at the foot of the bed. (3) The green display was too bright for me to sleep at night.

It's certainly a substantial radio for the money.
FM reception is excellent.
AM reception is marginal for a rural area.

One didn't work right out of the box.

Coby CX50 Compact AM/FM Radio with Digital Display, silver Review

Coby CX50 Compact AM/FM Radio with Digital Display, silver
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
These people giving bad reviews gotta rethink their value system. Just like a micro 10 cent pen won't be as good as a full sized 2 dollar one, the same holds true for radios.
There are only a few useful radios on the market this tiny, with a built in speaker (as opposed to headphone/earbuds - only radios). Out of the ones this tiny I found the CX-50 beat the others of similar size & price.
I bought mine for about 5 bucks, liked it so much, I ordered 3 more as stocking stuffers. For the price & size, I thought it was a good deal.
This isn't a serious performer. It's more like a micro travel radio or travel alarm clock (Yes it has an alarm clock in it).
It's stylish too. A cross between modern & retro, with an all metal face. It solid & heavy compared to most mini radios.
Sound quality is about what one would expect from such a little speaker... you won't get much bass, but the included earbuds sound rich & full.
It sounds better, tunes better, & has better reception than the Katio KA-208, & Coby CX53 (both of which are identical to each other except for the brand name stamped on it) radios. Tuning is tricky, but you get used to it. I've seen worse tuning on most mini & cheap radios.
FM reception was slightly above average for a mini, or cheap radio... Better on FM than the CX53, KA-208, Bell & Howell 9 band world receiver, & the Sony ICF-S10MK2 (other "under 10 dollar" radios).
AM reception was crip & clear, but not as sensitive as larger radios. Usuable, but no serious DXing on AM. I was able to pick up quite a few distant stations in evenings, but not as many or as clear as on the Sony or Bell & Howell radios (the only thing they're good for).
Because the stations take up such a wide space on the radio's AM dial, you do not need to tune it "dead on" the frequency to get the station clearly. The bad part of that is if there's a strong AM station near a desired weaker station, the stronger one will interfere with it unless you turn the radio a little to cancel out the stronger station.
It did reject noise & interference from computers & office machines on both bands better that the other radios I mention here.
It a fun little micro radio, that looks kinda cool. Ideally suited as a travel alarm, or basic ultra mini portable.
The 2 little AAA rechargeable batteries I put in mine have been going strong for over a week's worth of regular daily use without me having to recharge them.
So is it a great radio? No. It's a great radio for it's size, price, & efficiency... with better than average FM reception for a micro radio.
Keep one around for an emergency or because it looks cool too.
It's a couple millimeters thinner than the KA-208 & the CX53. It's also about a millimeter less wide & tall as well. That makes it the smallest radio with a built in speaker that I've ever seen in recent times.
There was one smaller I had in the 70s. AM only, ran on a single AA cell, & sensitivity was pretty bad... strong stations only. But I wish I could find one like that again because it was so tiny, & sounded good.

COBY MP-C341 Portable MP3 Boom Box w/256 MB Flash Memory & SD Card Slot Review

COBY MP-C341 Portable MP3 Boom Box w/256 MB Flash Memory and SD Card Slot
Average Reviews:

(More customer reviews)
The Coby MP-C341 boom box is the real deal. For the price, you really can't go wrong with this product. I can't think of a better companion to hit the beaches with this summer.
It is not only a boombox but also an alarm clock, an FM radio, external speakers for your iPod, and a direct-to-mp3 recording device. Try getting that from other manufacturers. Let alone for the price of $100 or less.
On the outside, it looks like a white gigantic capsule. Something a giant would swallow when he has a headache. Four speakers are embedded in front for pumping out your favorite tunes. There is a 4-line orange-yellow display right in the front center; just adequate enough to display its current mode. The slots and connectors are at the back for additional SD card, USB cable, AUX in and earphones. You don't even need to buy the cables, they come with unit. The only thing you need to shell out your money for is an extra SD card.
The boombox supports two digital audio formats: WMA and MP3 up to 256 Kpbs. As expected, it does not support DRM, so you can't play any of encrypted WMA song files. The sound quality is what you'd expect out of a low-to-mid end speaker. But still, pretty good. The 256MB internal memory is hardly enough storage. So I suggest buying an additional SD card for this little baby.
What if you already have loads of your music on your iPod already? Well, no fear. Use this boombox as your external speakers. Just connect the provided audio cable from your iPod to the AUX-in jack and you're rockin'.
OK, I saved the best for last. If you're still not impressed with this device, at least get it for its direct-to-mp3 capability. Still have a 45's collection? Convert those into mp3 using this device. Connect the boombox to the audio source and hit the "Record" button. it cannot be simpler than that. In addition, you can also record off the built-in radio or internal microphone.
Why am I not giving it 5 stars? Well, two minor things: the build quality and that 4-line display (hardly enough to get any detailed information).
Want more information? You can contact me at [...] and I'll be happy to share my experience on this device with you.

An ideal choice for those looking to take group jam sessions on the road, the Coby portable MP3 boom box comes with 256 MB of built-in flash memory and an SD card slot for unlimited playback capacity. Measuring only 11 inches long and only 3.3 inches in diameter, the boom box's capsule-like shape makes for an easily portable device. The convenient size and shape of the boom box makes it easy to throw it in a backpack or beach bag, and it even comes with a detachable shoulder strap should you want to carry the device alone. Complete with four built-in speakers powered by four C batteries (included), you'll have enough volume output to party like it's 1999, no matter where you are.
Loading music onto the boom box is simple: All you need to do is connect the boom box to a PC or Mac with the provided USB cable, drag files onto the device, and then you're ready to rock and roll. The boom box also features a digital voice recording mode and real-time MP3 encoding, useful when you want to record directly from other audio devices or live performances. A built-in FM tuner helps you keep tabs on current weather and news updates. To ensure that a variety of playback comes out loudly and optimally clearly, the series of equalizer presets includes normal, classic, rock, jazz, and pop. Other great features include an easy-to-read LCD screen that can display song title and artist information, an alarm clock, mass-storage capabilities, and upgradable firmware. Designed for plug-and-play convenience, the boom box supports Windows 98 SE, Windows ME, Windows 2000, Windows XP, and Mac OS X operating systems.
