These clocks come in "Sir" and "Madam". I have the "Madam" clock, which has flowers in the corners of the face, rather then the more manley accents of the "Sir" model... It's my understanding that all the lines are the same in both clocks exept for "Sir" or "Madam". (Although it's possible to change a "Madam" clock to say "Sir" and vice versa by holding down the rosette button above the clock face as you install the three AA batteries.)
First of all, the clock looks great. It has a nice weighty feel when you pick it up. It looks studious and classy sitting anywhere you care to set it down.
I was just woken up by this clock for the first time this morning... I get up at 4 AM so that I can call people in other time zones at an hour convienent for them. So I need all the help I can get in being chipper first thing when I roll out of bed. It starts off with the sound of chirping birds, then you hear Stephen Fry/Jeeves clear his throat, say "Good Morning Madam" (or Sir) and then something pithy about getting up and starting your day. The clock will then beep a couple of times. You can stop the beeping by pressing the "rosette" button above the clock face, and Sephen Fry/Jeeves will say something else (like "Deftly done Madame.").
The sound quality is pretty good and there's a volume control knob on the back for you to adust it to your liking.
The clock runs on three AA batteries... Although I'm not sure what the third battery is for, since the clock started making noise after I'd inserted the second battery.
I feel I must be honest. I'm a single woman who lives alone, I go to sleep when it's dark and wake up when it's dark (depending on the time of year). So the sound of a deep, sonorous, male, disembodied voice speaking to me while I'm half asleep and half awake, whether or not I'm alone in my apartment, is a little creepy even if it is Stephen Fry.
I imagine it'll take some getting used to.
The write up expounds the soothing and gentle way Mr. Fry's dulcet tones bring you to wakefulness instead of the normal jarring beeps of less refined alarm clocks. Unfortunately, Mr. Fry's dulcet tones are always followed by loud jarring beeps unless you're very quick to hit that rosette button... I understand the thinking here, but I would have preferred increased volume on more bird song or church bells or the sound of Jeeves clinking the crystal juice glass with the silver spoon he will use to crack the shell of my perfectly cooked 3 minute egg. But no, it's high pitched beeping.
There's no snooze feature on the clock, or at least not one you can count on. According to the documentation, the alarm *might* go off again an hour to 45 minutes after the set alarm time. To avoid this, you will have to remember to use the "off" switch for the alarm on the back (and remember to switch it back on again before you go to sleep that night). That could actually be a feature if it where a reliable occurrence, but the documentation makes it sound like a spotty malfunction they'll never bother to fix...
This clock is expensive. (Lucky for me, I had some gift cards and was feeling frivolous.) I imagine Mr. Fry's time doesn't come cheap, and the clock itself is probably imported from the UK (though it's made in China). I chose this clock in a fit of mirth over one that had more features for less then half the price specifically because I liked the idea of Jeeves telling me to get up in the morning. If I had been spending all of my own money, I would have liked to spend less. As it is, I'm very happy with the clock as it is.
The sheer amount of content provided in voice recordings and the excellent delivery pushes this clock from three stars to four... I really wanted to give this item five stars... The voice in and of itself is five stars... But the price, lack of features and documented malfunction keep it from being everything I've ever wanted in an alarm clock.
