It has luminous spots on the hands and face to show in the dark, so a background light neither lights up the room nor fails on you as happened with my last travel alarm. It is completely silent but the alarm is high pitched and very loud. The alarm is set by turning a dial on the front of the clock, so if you want to set by five minutes it would be difficult, but by 20 minute intervals it's easy. Alarm turns on and off with slide switch on the side of the clock. It's an easy clock to set and use and is extremely light so fits the bill for a travel clock for me.
